1998H1烧焦前*烧焦时*烧焦后系列 I焕然一新
2007/12/11

To you people that are viewing this website, this may seem as an ordinary hummer but in our family it's much more than that. We have went through great and rough times with it. We at first bought the hummer stock in 1997 with the intentions of racing it in the Sportmans class in the Baja 1000 for 1998 which it did with the major sponsorship of Shell USA and other sponsors. It won it's class under the driving of 6 men of Canada, which also has a documentary taped about the experience and adventure. We decided though that this Hummer was not capable of racing even though it won its class, it was default for no one else finished in the class and even the Hummer didn't, it just made it the farthest.
We than used it for the chase team for another Hummer(that's a future cardomain posting) we raced in the next two Baja's, in the 1000 and the millenium one which was 2000 miles. It would go on for the next 4 years as a family vehicle even though it still showed the abuse from racing in Baja for we decide to semi retire for awhile. Than in 2004 we had the urge to race again this time in the Pro Stock with this Hummer again as chase vehicle. We were working with a local high school in attempt to give teens motivation to work in the automotive industry, we than choosed 6 teenagers to come down with us from Canada all the way to Baja as the pit crew to give them the thrill of a lifetime.
Unfortunately, this is where the story hits the low point. Once we crossed the border into Mexico while trailering the other Hummer, this Hummer caught fire due to a tranmission line spraying oil onto the exhaust manifold. It caused damage to most of the interior and all of the electrical. Heartbreak continued to happen as the race Hummer was unable to compete in the Baja due to transmission problems that were unable to be fixed. The Hummers were than trailered home to Canada with their futures in doubt, especially this one. I was unable to decide at the time what to do with it, rebuilding it would take tons of time and money that we didn't really have but due to my wife and children coaxing i decide we were going to rebuild it and better than it was ever before.
I started by creating a list of things i would want on this creation when it was done, and this is what i came up with:
-slantback
-Duramax 6.6L LLY
-5 inch straight exhaust
-a radiator fit for Baja
-new paintjob
-another set of rims
-custom fitted interior
-buckets seats for 5
-new offroad lights
-a better air conditioner
-4 wheel steering
-new security system
-new audio system
I wanted to have a slantback for the military Humvees look radical with it equipped so I had to cut out the back window and the rest of the rear of the cab. The 6.5L is not even 1/3 the engine that Duramax is, I wanted more power and better fuel economy and that's what I got with the 6.6L. I wanted to hear the turbo whistle that sweet sound and that's what I got by adding a transport stack right to the engine. The 6.6L was going to need a better cooling system for it's a bigger engine so i had to supply it with it's needs. Hummer needed a new paintjob but i wanted to stick to the colours it was known for, so i took pearl white, metallic black with red pinstriping to split the two. I needed a change from the steel black rims it was sporting at the time and the other set was being used on the race Hummer so I recieved a used set of H2 chrome rims, and took the center caps of them. Unfortunately I have not gotten around to setting the rims up with the CTIS system but I found a way of doing so. The interior was shot, so it was actually cheaper to get it custom made than buy the stock set from Hummer. My family has 5 members, hence the need of 5 seats, and the other seats were also shot, plus the ones I found on eBay were also heated. I wanted to do something with the roof, it was either an air conditioner or a sunroof, the air conditioner won. I equipped it with one for a Motorhome, no longer will i bask in hot leather on warm summer day. The offroad lamps draws attention from the eye sore the RV A/C unit would have sported if it was all alone on the roof so IPF was able to give us 6 of them for free. I configured out a way to set up a 4 wheel steering unit on the Hummer, I already have the hydraulic pump mounted on the frame and all the lines, it's a matter of putting on the cylinders. Cause of all the wiring damage done to the Hummer I was able to rig up a system that would make this Hummer far harder steal for my last two family vehicles were stolen and well sort of had enough of it. The audio system hasn't even been started as of yet for I have not looked around for who would be willing to give a free system for the Hummer. I am alright now though hearing the sweet sound of the turbo working.
The paintjob was done at Rick's Auto body located near Simcoe, Ont, the interior was done by Converta-Boat located near St. Williams, Ont. The gauge covers, vents, shifter, pedals (not shown in pictures), glovebox, storage compartments, cup holder, gas hole cover, top light rack were made by my sons in their manufacturing class. They still have plans of making floormats out of diamond plate aluminium. The gauges are Nordskog digital, We've just have gotten around to hooking them up yet (wiring nightmare).

It has taken us 3 years bit by bit to put this Hummer together, and it's still not completely done, there still needs to be more electrical to get all the windows to work and the automatic door locks along with the gages on the dash. We raised the Hummer 4 inches to accomodate the Duramax engine to fit right, and it's also running on the auxiliary tank to allow us have more room underneath the Hummer to work with. For all the people out there that think all Hummer's have terrible fuel mileage, well this one is getting 16 miles per gallon, and that's with a Lightbar and A/C unit on top hurting the mileage on it also. Why Hummer doesn't put a Duramax engine in the H2 is beyond me though, people would stop complaining how terrible there on fuel.
